What Does BJJ Stand For?

When I was first looking for a martial art to learn in 2017 I consistently ran into the acronym BJJ. I wanted to provide a succinct definition for anybody looking into the acronym.

BJJ stands for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. BJJ is a grappling martial art that emphasizes joint-lock and choking-oriented submissions. It was adapted from Judo in Brazil by the Gracie family around 1920 after being introduced by a traveling Japanese Judoka Mitsuyo Maeda in 1917.

If you are interested in what you would expect in your first class of BJJ check out my post here.

Another article you might be interested in that touches on the culture of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the origins of the word “Oss” which is commonly used by BJJ athletes that I wrote about here.

Hi, I'm Andre and I am the author of this website. I have always been fascinated with martial arts and train them as often as I can. I currently train primarily in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and train judo and wrestling as secondary martial arts. I help to coach a kid's grappling program that blends all three martial arts. I hope that you find the value that you are looking for in the articles on this website.
